
Chia seeds, scientifically known as Salvia hispanica is a member of the mint family, can reach up to 1 meter in height. It thrives in well-drained soils with a preference for higher altitudes. It’s adaptability to diverse climates has facilitated it’s integration into modern agricultural practices, making them more accessible to people worldwide. In the contemporary agricultural landscape, chia seeds are cultivated not only in their native regions of Mexico and Guatemala but also in various parts of the world with suitable climates, including countries like Australia and the United States.
In the realm of nutrition, these tiny superfoods have taken the health-conscious world by storm. They are an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids and boast a high content of fiber, promoting digestive regularity and a feeling of fullness. These seeds are also rich in antioxidants, which help protect the body from oxidative stress and inflammation.
Chia seeds can absorb up to 10 times their weight in water, and of great help in keeping bodies hydrated and promote a gradual release of energy.
Additionally, chia seeds are a plant-based protein source, and it accounts for approximately 18 percent of its mass making them an ideal choice for vegetarians and vegans.
Moreover, chia seeds supply many minerals, with phosphorus, calcium, potassium and magnesium found in greatest amounts 1.
Chia seeds can be made in a gel and as a result can be used to thicken foods such as sauces, jams, or as an egg replacement in baking. Simply mix together 1 tablespoon of chia seeds and 2.5 tablespoons of water. Mix thoroughly to ensure all the seeds are covered with water and let it stand for 30 minutes.
These magic seeds are a fantastic and easy addition to smoothies, yoghurt or as a base for chia pudding.
One of my favourite ways to enjoy chia seeds is in a smoothie.
Here is one version of a smoothie I make using them
INGREDIENTS
2 tablespoons of chia seeds (soaked in water for at least 4 hours so it forms a gel)
2 cups of coconut water/ coconut milk or your liquid of choice
1 tablespoon of raw cacao powder
sprinkle of cinnamon
1 tablespoon of maple syrup
1 Acai pack
Handful of frozen bananas
Scoop of protein powder
METHOD:
Put all ingredients into a blender and purée until smooth.
Serve immediately.
