Moments of overwhelm-what can help?

First of all, trust me you are not alone if you feel overcome with work and or life. We have all been there, and guess what? There’s a way to not only weather the storm but also come out stronger on the other side. When I am overwhelmed it reminds me how important it is to go back to basics. What that looks like will be different for everyone but here are some things that help me and I think you will find useful.

Movement
This always helps and it costs nothing. I always feel much calmer walking by the ocean and listening to the sound of the waves but equally if that is not possible or time is a factor walking around your local street is beneficial. The sounds (or sometimes the silence depending on where you are), the smells, the light all shift your thoughts if even for a few moments. It allows you to connect back to your own essence and what you feel is right for you. It also ensures you get movement in your day which helps your body move emotions and energy.

Stretching

Stretching can help alleviate muscle tension and promote relaxation and mindfulness, offering a brief reprieve from the chaos. Consider integrating simple stretches, such as the neck tilt, where you gently tilt your head to each side, releasing tension in the neck and shoulders. Additionally, the forward fold—reaching towards your toes while keeping your legs straight—can provide a release for the lower back and hamstrings. The chest opener, clasp your hands behind your back and open up your chest, helps counteract the effects of prolonged sitting and promotes deep breathing. These stretches, even when done for just a few minutes, contribute to improved circulation, increased flexibility, and a sense of rejuvenation during times of overwhelm.

Food

When you have a lot going on in your life or working through many things it can be a challenge to eat healthy to feel your best. This can be as a result of being on the run and picking what is easiest or you might not feel like picking the best option for your health. In these moments I just do the best I can as I think it is for a period of time. I try and up my fruit and vegetable intake in the morning so if the rest of the day does not go to plan at least I have started in the best way to nourish my body.

Meditation

I am going to be very honest this is often the area that I let slip when I am overwhelmed and the one that I need the most during challenging times. When this happens I often take a breath and close my eyes for a few minutes until I can get back into a rhythm again. This can sometimes happen for an extended period when I am experiencing a lot of overwhelm but I alway come back and trust that I will find my way back. I just keep coming back to the present moment and just notice the beauty in the moment despite what may be happening in my life at that time.

Social Connection

We can often remove ourself from social interactions during overwhelm. This can be helpful at times as we need to connect to our inner self and find silence. I have found that doing this for an extended time can leave me feeling disconnected and overwhelmed. By connecting with a friend or support network it can often help one see that the challenge can be overcome and that there are people there to listen and support you if needed. Sometimes it can be the feeling of being in the presence of another.

Seek Professional help

If the storm refuses to calm, it might be time to call to seek professional support. A mental health professional or your local GP can be a beneficial place to reach for help.
