Brazil nut

Oh how I love this nut so much and it’s deliciousness. It is one nut that often flies under the radar but packs a powerful punch in terms of it’s health benefits.

It is an edible seed of a large South American tree found in the Amazonian forests of Brazil, Peru, Colombia and Ecuador.  It has a rich, creamy flavour and crisp firm texture. Delectable as a snack on its own, used to make deliciously fresh nut butter and dairy-free nut mylk or added to food recipes, baked goods, and savoury or sweet dishes.

So how can it boost our health well-being ?

One of the standout features of Brazil nuts is their exceptionally high selenium content. Selenium is a vital mineral that plays a crucial role in various bodily functions, including immune system support, thyroid function, and antioxidant defense. In fact, just one Brazil nut can provide your daily recommended intake of selenium! A diet rich in selenium has been linked to a reduced risk of chronic diseases.

Brazil nuts can be a heart-healthy addition to your diet. They are a good source of healthy monounsaturated fats, which can help lower bad LDL cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of heart disease.

These nuts are packed with antioxidants like vitamin E, which can help protect your cells from oxidative damage caused by free radicals. Antioxidants are essential for maintaining youthful skin, reducing the risk of chronic diseases, and supporting overall health

Selenium is a crucial nutrient for proper thyroid function. It helps convert inactive thyroid hormones into their active form, which is essential for regulating metabolism, energy production, and overall well-being.

Selenium isn’t just important for your physical health; it can also positively impact your mood and cognitive function. Studies have suggested that selenium may help reduce the risk of depression and cognitive decline. Including Brazil nuts in your diet can be a simple way to support your mental well-being.

Brazil nuts are a good source of magnesium, a mineral that is essential for strong bones. Alongside calcium and vitamin D, magnesium plays a crucial role in bone formation and density.

If I don’t have them on their own as a snack I will add them to a a trail mix combined with dried fruit and seeds, on top of my açai bowl or sprinkle them on salads.

Enjoy Brazil nuts as part of a balanced diet, and savour the many ways they can contribute to a healthier, happier you. They are a great addition to add to your lifestyle and add variety to you diet.

Much love xx
