Emotions

Emotions are part of our daily life. They dictate how we react to the world around us and influence the decisions we make. But what if you could harness the power of your emotions to live a more fulfilling life? Enter the Wheel of Emotions – a practical tool that can help the way you navigate your feelings and how it can be your secret weapon for thriving in everyday life.

As you grow, your range of emotions and your ability to express and understand them grow, too. Traumatic experiences or conditioning may cause some people to suppress or ignore emotions they don’t want to remember or talk about, especially unpleasant ones. When you’re able to determine and correctly name emotions, you can broaden your understanding of them, which often leads to a greater ability to respond to and learn from feelings constructively.

The wheel has primary emotions at its core: joy, fear, surprise, sadness, disgust, anger, and anticipation. These are the raw ingredients of our emotional experiences. By mixing these primary emotions, you can create a palette of nuanced feelings.

The middle ring blends adjacent primary emotions to create secondary emotions. Joy and trust combine to conjure love, while fear and surprise brew up submission.

The outermost layer takes it up a notch, producing tertiary emotions by merging primary emotions with secondary ones. This layer adds layers of complexity. Blend joy with anticipation, and you’ve got yourself some optimism. Combine sadness with disgust, and you might feel remorseful.

So how can this empower you to transform your everyday life you may ask?

It can help you make emotionally intelligent decisions. Next time you are faced with a tough decision, review the Wheel. It can help you pinpoint the emotions influencing your choices. Are you making this decision out of fear, anger, or anticipation? Understanding your emotional motives leads to wiser choices.

Navigating relationships-When you can identify the emotions someone else is experiencing, you’re better equipped to communicate effectively and build stronger connections.

Embrace the wheel as a tool to help master your emotions and practice pausing and feeling into the emotion and the sensation it brings.

Try this somatic exercise to help you develop embodied self-awareness: Choose an emotion you have felt recently, such as anger, sadness, or shame.

Now create a mental image of what this emotion feels like. Where do you notice it in their body? Does your jaw tense, heart race, or your stomach feel queasy? How does it look and feel? Describe it using colour, shape, texture, and temperature.
