Gratitude

Gratitude is the quality of being thankful and grateful and having appreciation for all that we have. It has a positive impact on our physical, mental and emotional health and it is strongly associated with greater happiness.

I have truly found the practice to be very impactful on my life. Even when times are challenging just that moment of stopping to think of something to be grateful for can change my mood quickly and make a challenging situation easier to deal with.

If I am stuck I often start with these questions to begin:

  • Name things that make you happy?
  • What are some things that inspire you?
  • Which people nurture you?

Now you may ask what are some practical ways to cultivate gratitude in our daily life.

Morning contemplation– On waking take a moment to be grateful for having the opportunity to begin another day and set your intention. It can be as simple as ‘ I will find joy in each interaction during the day’ or ‘I love my life and I look forward to the day ahead’.

Mealtime gratitude– you might be grateful for having food that you can enjoy which provides nutrition for a healthy body. Maybe gratitude for the sun and earth that provided the food. Doing this at mealtimes can be a good way to being the process of gratitude as it helps to implement it into your life in blocks during the day.

Keep a gratitude journal– Some people find it easier to write and this is where a gratitude journal can be very helpful. It could be the sounds you hear like the birds in the morning or the dog in the background. You could be mindful of the people you are with and how much you love them.

Meditate– this can be a wonderful time to get silent and allow things to come to you that you an be grateful for even if it is the fact of being grateful have set the time aside to meditate for your own self-care and wellbeing.

Appreciation– tell someone that you value them and explain why they are very much appreciated.

Gratitude has the power to create a positive ripple effect on the world at large. When you embrace gratitude, you inspire others to do the same, creating a chain reaction of kindness, compassion, and happiness.
